Even today the all-knowledgeable Quid admits on page 605, column C of the 1987 edition that: « the total number of WW1 was deliberately underestimated ». 252,900 reported missing this encyclopeadia tells us. So what does this really mean? This question obsesses Commandant Dellaplane (Philippe Noiret), head of the Investigation Bureau for Missing Soldiers in November 1920, as he balances up the deadly accounts. An impulsive, uncompromising man whose methodical investigations occasionnally succeed in returning a man to his distraught family, transforming a missing person into a survivor. The families don't despair. The unreasonable hope of two young women leads them to Dellaplane. The land is devastated. Blood, mourning, ruin. Only Life is left, Life and nothing else.
