While she is a little girl Sorenza Salvoni learns that life is far from easy : on two separate occasions her parents are wronfully accused of stealing, and each time they are forced to leave their homes - the first time in Italy and the second in France. When her mother dies, Sorenza learns that the person she had believed to be her father is in truth not her father at all. He abandons her, and she finds herself in an orphanage. With her life turned upside down, Sorenza makes two vows : firstly that she will find her real father, and secondly that come what may she hold on to La Croix de Lumière. This small patch of land near the town of Grasse on which grow jamine flowers of an exceptionally beautiful fragrance, had belonged to her mother.
