During Senegal's colonial period, French was the official language. Any music that was sung in the local language had to be listened to in private. But in 1960, the country's first elected president-poet and politician Léopold Senghor-brought traditional, homegrown arts back to center stage. Soon, Senegal had reconnected with its musical roots, and the Orchestra Baobab was born. Orchestra Baobab, Another History of Senegal follows the story of the turmoil, independence, economic crises and social renewal of this fascinating country through the eyes, ears and voices of four generations of legendary musicians who are still here to sing the tale.
