Human-interest stories are fascinating to us - they exorcize our fears and feed our curiosity. We can all imagine a similar event happening to us, and Crime up close actually allows us to relive it - from the inside. It is the dramatization of a real incident, told in documentary style. In this "reality show" unlike any other, a human-interest story is pulled from the news (murder, assassination, kidnapping, robbery...), and then is retold using all the tools of both news reporting and drama. We get interviews with experts, we get the social, familial and professional context of the incident. Yet the story is scripted and directed, with actors playing all the parts - the expert, the victim, those close to the victim, and the perpetrator or perpetrators of the incident (to protect the anonymity of those involved, all names are changed). We are placed inside the mind of the protagonist, at the heart of events - before, during and after the incident. Crime up close is reality fiction at its most exciting and close-up.
