Vanina's life was deeply scarred by the death of her father, Inspector Giovanni Guarrasi, who was killed by a Mafia commando before her eyes when she was only 13 years old. Since that day her only goal had been to become a policewoman and fight against the Mafia. And so she did: as a policewoman, for years she distinguished herself for her extraordinary investigative work against organized crime at the Palermo Antimafia.
But she reached a breaking point. So, she decided to leave Palermo and move to the Catania Mobile Squad, where she became head of the Homicide unit.
In Catania, Vanina found a new team - Chief Inspector Carmelo Spanò, her right-hand man, the flawless, northern and vegan Inspector Marta Bonazzoli, the funny Superintendent Mimmo Nunnari, the young and fit, but apparently not very bright, Officer Angelo Lo Faro – and with all of them she achieved a very good relationship. With the company of her childhood friend, the bubbly lawyer "Giuli" De Rosa, and her new friend and confidant, the medical examiner Adriano Calì, in Catania Vanina discovered the possibility of a new life.
