The 2016 US presidential campaign was especially fierce. Stepping into the crossfire, from Scarlett Johansson to Robert Downey Jr. or Robert De Niro, many Hollywood stars played a particularly remarkable role, as seen in numerous clips showing swarms of celebrities speaking out. Traditionally Democratic, the film industry reached out through YouTube and Twitter to make an equally astonishing impact, touching millions of fans.
But the day after Donald Trump was elected to be the new President of the United States, reality had to be faced: the huge efforts that dozens of movie stars had made to beat Trump had no impact on voting results. For analysts, it was no surprise: the world of Hollywood has never had a real influence on politics. However, Hollywood does have the expertise of getting media attention for causes and raising money.
Our film will look at how the relationship between politics and the star system has evolved from 1950 to the present day.
