He is a professional « expat », began his career as a journalist before doing executive humanitarian work, managing operations for Europe, writing for tourist guides… In 2002, before turning fifty and after having travelled the world, he decides it’s time for him to retire; he disembarks in Afghanistan to make money, with the great idea of opening the « Kabul Kitchen ». Two years later, customers attend the place despite high prices and mediocre food. But he has one major problem: keeping his restaurant open when the alcohol, the pool and the population are completely against afghan customs.
Stéphanie Pasterkamp as SOPHIE
Sophie is in Kabul for humanitarian work. She is Jacky’s daughter, but her father, absent for twenty-five years, is a stranger to her. Sophie is a young woman of 27 years, pure and tough. Come to save Afghanistan, she is quickly confronted to the reality of the humanitarian caravan, its limits, paradoxes, blunders, drifts… Sophie is full of principles. They give her a tendency to be psycho rigid. She studied literature and economy and wrote a thesis on economical science in sustainable development. All her knowledge will be of no use in Kabul, where her problems are far more down to earth, like how to get rid of 300 pairs of skis, offered by the generous donators of Mégève and Gstaad.
Benjamin Bellecour as AXEL
Thirty year old bachelor who plays corporate manager, eternal adolescent with no managing capacities, Axel is a likeable wanker. He finds himself tangled up in the electoral campaign of a candidate, former war chief supported by the CIA…and drug lord. His story can be summed up this way: come to work in humanitarian, Axel finally elects a drug lord.
Simon Abkarian as AMANULLAH
Former chief of war, hero of the fight against Talibans, drug lord at the head of a small army, this warrior seeks a new respectability and decides to present himself to the local elections to become deputy. He goes to a poor Kabul neighborhood, where people « don’t know how to read, how to write, how to think, and for them, I’m already a hero». For him, victory is ensured. Only dark spot in the picture: Hamida, his rival, one of the rare women to present themselves to elections in the country. Amanullah decides to take a campaign director, and chooses Axel.
Alexis Michalik as DAMIEN
Thirty years old, pretty boy, unshaven, Camel Trophy surfer look carefully thought out, Damien has come to Afghanistan to start a career as a special correspondent. But in special correspondent, it’s « special » that he likes. He plays the part of cynical adventurer who has seen and done it all. Show-off, conceited, thoughtless, ruthlessly ambitious and selfish, at least he knows one thing: photography works better than communications with girls.
